Racing Extinction
The film wasn’t the starting point.
Racing Extinction changed how I thought about building digital experiences. The film explored some of the most existential challenges we face as a species. I didn’t want to simply create a campaign, launch social channels, and build a website to promote a documentary. We needed a movement. As the project’s Director of Digital, I led the creation of an expanding ecosystem around the issues, people, and solutions at the heart of the film. We wanted to bring audiences along on the journey so that, by the time the film premiered, they were already part of the story. They knew the characters, understood the issues, and had opportunities to take action.
To make that work, every social post, website experience, event, and ultimately the film itself needed to stand on its own. But the connective tissue between them was just as important. Each piece added something new to the larger story, deepening the audience’s understanding, building on what came before, and giving them a reason to keep exploring.
We flipped the script. Nearly a year before the premiere, we began introducing the issues, characters, and solutions without giving away the film itself. Rather than asking audiences to wait for the documentary, we invited them to become part of the story as it unfolded. The film became the culmination of that journey, not the moment it began.
Building the movement
Give people a way in. Then a reason to stay.
We started with the audience, not the premiere date. The goal was to introduce the issues and people behind the film early, then give audiences meaningful ways to follow the story and take part.
As Director of Digital, I led the connected social, web, and short-form experiences alongside our primary creative partners, Human Design and Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS), and the broader filmmaking and impact teams. Together, we built the pathways that brought those stories and audiences together.
Before the premiere
Build an audience before the film.
We introduced the people, species, and stakes through stories worth following and sharing, without giving away the documentary.
Beyond the screen
Turn attention into action.
Public projections drew worldwide attention. Digital storytelling connected that attention to context, partners, petitions, and practical actions.
After the premiere
Keep the conversation going.
The film was a milestone, not the finish line. Audiences could continue learning, sharing, and participating long after the credits.
Campaign results and activities reflect a collaborative effort across the filmmakers, Vulcan Productions, OPS, and partners.
The results
A story already in motion.
By the time Racing Extinction premiered globally, an audience was already following the issues, sharing the work, and finding ways to participate. The film reached audiences across more than 220 countries and territories through Discovery, while the campaign continued through partners, screenings, education, and calls to action.
