I always wanted to be
Spider-Man
When childhood experiments with irradiated spiders failed to produce the desired superpowers, I begrudgingly set aside that goal.
But thanks to my dad putting a camera in my welted hand, I pursued a Peter Parker-like life in photojournalism and multimedia storytelling. While I still daydream of web-slinging, in the real world I’ve been able to sling stories that mattered deeply to people and created a greater understanding of some of the most complex issues of our time.

somewhere.
It was never really about the superpowers*
The people who make stories matter have always fascinated me. The journalists who ask one more question. The photographers who notice what everyone else walks past. The designers, producers, editors, and technologists who find entirely new ways to help someone understand the world. Each brings something different, and the best work happens when those talents connect.
I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some remarkable people, and I’ve learned that creative leadership is as much about making room for their ideas as having ideas of your own. Building trust, encouraging curiosity, and giving people the freedom to experiment can turn a good story into something much bigger than any one of us imagined.
Where I’ve put
the ideas to work
From newsrooms and digital journalism to documentary films, immersive experiences, and editorial leadership, I’ve followed the possibilities of storytelling wherever they’ve led.
Along the way, I’ve worked with talented teams at NBC News, Microsoft, Vulcan Productions, and The Pew Charitable Trusts, and had opportunities to teach the next generation of journalists. Each chapter has brought new tools, new collaborators, and new questions worth asking.

Still making things
I still take photographs, still play bass, and still get a particular satisfaction from making something with my hands. Woodturning is a good reminder that patience matters, that the material sometimes has other ideas, and that a little curiosity can take you somewhere unexpected.
Most of all, I’m a family man and a proud dad to two terrific kids. They keep me curious, keep me laughing, and regularly remind me there’s more than one way to see the world. I hope I never stop learning, making things, or asking what might be possible next.
